Lisa Krasner made official Wednesday what Silver State Confidential subscribers have known for a couple of weeks now: She’s running against moderate Assemblyman Randy Kirner (anemic 58.43% NPRI rating) in Reno.
“I wanted you to be the first to know that today I formally announced I am running as a Republican for Assembly District 26,” the self-described “conservative Republican” wrote in an email. “Our neighbors don’t feel like they’re being represented by the incumbent, Randy Kirner, and I want to change that. I think that I can do a better job representing the people of Nevada and the people of my district.”
Bravo!
I love this. Too many candidates are too afraid to say they’re running because they feel the incumbent is cutting the cheese instead of cutting the mustard. As challengers, too many candidates are afraid to even mention their opponent’s name, let alone say anything critical of them.
Well, um, if you can’t say anything bad about your opponent, why run against him, right?
“I’m running for Assembly District 26 because Nevadans can’t afford more taxes,” Krasner continued, “and I will fight for Nevada’s hardworking taxpayers, families, and job creators. I won’t support additional tax increases. I feel that Nevada families are forced to live within their budgets, and Nevada’s government needs to work within their budget as well, instead of increasing taxes.”
Sssss-lam!
Over the past two legislative sessions, Kirner has been a community organizer for tax hikers. He’s voted to extend the $620 million worth of “temporary” tax hikes not once, but TWICE. (I hope Mrs. Krasner will commit to voting against any further extensions of these “sunsets.”)
And he, along with Assembly Minority Leader Pat Hickey, has been a cheerleader for the effort to circumvent the Gibbons Tax Restraint law by allowing the Washoe County school district to impose a tax hike to dump more money into our “failure factory” public schools.
Kirner also, by the way, was the man responsible for killing the only conservative education reform proposal that had a chance of passing this year, persuading enough of his fellow Republicans to vote against a “parental trigger” bill that would have allowed parents of crappy public schools to vote to force the government to convert their school to a charter school.
As for Krasner’s other bona fides…
“I teach university students courses on Political Science, United States Constitution and the Nevada Constitution. I have served for seven years as a Commissioner for the City of Reno’s Parks and Recreation Commission and currently serve on the State of Nevada’s Commission on Aging and Disability. I am a Board Member for the State of Nevada PTA, First Vice-President of Washoe Republican Women’s Club, and First Vice President of the Alliance with Washoe County Medical Society.”
The PTA thing causes me a little concern, because the PTA has been so anti-education reform in so many communities for so long. But other than that, a pretty solid resume…especially the part about teaching the Constitution!
I also checked out her campaign website and LOVED this part on her “Where Lisa Stands” page: “It is not the government’s job to create jobs; it is the legislature’s job to support policy that will help local businesses grow and compete.”
B-I-N-G-O!!
I am so tired of politicians who have never signed the front of a paycheck claiming they’re going to “create jobs” through this bill or that legislation. The only thing the government should do to create jobs is get the hell out of the way of people who actually know how to create them and would do so again if unshackled from bureaucratic taxation, regulation and red tape.
By the way, did I mention that Assemblyman Kirner has TWICE voted to reimpose the doubling of the payroll tax in Nevada, as well as a doubling of the business license fee?
